In collaboration with Google DeepMind and Google Research, Google Cloud has introduced a groundbreaking tool called SynthID. Its primary purpose is to distinguish artificial intelligence (AI)-generated images, which are increasingly indistinguishable from real ones. These AI-crafted images, generated by computers, can often deceive viewers into thinking they are genuine.

The innovation behind SynthID lies in its ability to embed a concealed watermark, a unique code, within these images. This watermark is expertly hidden from the human eye but can be detected by computers. This subtle addition simplifies the task of recognizing AI-generated images.

SynthID leverages two intelligent systems to carry out its functions: one for embedding the watermark and another for detecting it. These systems have learned extensively by analyzing various images, making them exceptionally proficient in their roles. This approach ensures that the pictures maintain their visual appeal while becoming more accessible to identify.

Unlike traditional watermarks, which were easily removable or alterable, SynthID’s watermark is a game-changer. It does not compromise the quality of the image. Even if you tweak the image’s colors or dimensions, the watermark remains concealed, and computers can reliably uncover it.

This advanced technology is currently available to select customers who subscribe to Vertex AI or a model known as Imagen.
